Peter Sutherland, Director (non-executive)
Peter Sutherland is an experienced executive with academic credentials in law, public administration and economics.
He has over 40 years of professional experience involving diplomacy, law, international business development, trade policy, international financial institutions, teaching and the management of multi-disciplinary teams.
During his distinguished career with the Canadian diplomatic service, Mr. Sutherland served as Canada’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Philippines and High Commissioner to India. He also worked on trade and investment matters in the Ivory Coast, Hungary and the United States of America and as an attorney in the Inter-American Development Bank. In Canada, he held senior executive positions responsible for business development and international trade policy in the departments of Foreign Affairs, Industry and Agriculture.
Mr. Sutherland is currently Senior Business Advisor to Aird & Berlis LLP in Toronto, where he advises companies doing business in south and southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
He is also Vice-Chair and past President and CEO of the Canada–India Business Council, Canada’s leading private sector, not-for-profit business association linking Canada and India.
Mr. Sutherland served on the Government of Alberta’s Asia Advisory Council, and is a member of the Schulich School of Business’ International Advisory Council. He is a Director of Royal College Canada International and the Canada-India Research Centre of Excellence.
